The Stark County Park District is currently seeking a full time Crew Leader (Parks & Trails) to join of our Operations team building and maintaining parks and trails within an 8000+ acre park system in Stark County. Essential Functions:

  • Successfully schedules, leads and field supervises assigned crews in completion of Stark Parks trail maintenance. Completes necessary documentation relating to work performance, work orders, project completion reports, and time activity reporting.
  • Successfully supports the assigned work crew by establishing daily crew goals and individual tasks/duties. Responsible for reviewing and monitoring job progress as well as helping to evaluate the crew worker(s) performance and providing situational coaching as appropriate.
  • Duties include training and mentoring of assigned crew members on daily hands on aspects of their position.
  • Performs a variety of park and trail maintenance related duties in relation to building and maintaining trails, parks, and parking lots including but not limited to mowing, trimming trees and bushes, spreading materials, measuring progress and signage installations.
  • Responsible for operating large and small equipment (chipper, brush hog, mowers, tractors and appropriate attachments) safely and effectively.
  • Responsible for safely and effectively operating and tending a variety of large and small equipment and machinery including but not limited to, mowing equipment, tractors with attachments, trucks and trailers, brush hog, and chippers.
  • Ensures completion of trail maintenance duties including working with and directing two to four person crews (on average) in completion of tasks.
  • Trains crew(s) in regard to appropriate work and safety standards and ensures compliance with Stark County Park District and Operations Department policies relating to safety. Ensures crew compliance with safety mandates and reporting requirements set forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Public Employment Risk Reduction Program (PERRP).
  • Effectively interacts with crew workers, patrons and manages difficult situations involving questions and concerns appropriately.
  • Safely and effectively uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment in performance of duties; responsible for complying with a variety of safety regulations and maintaining clean and orderly work areas and park owned vehicles.
  • Safely and effectively complete snow removal duties. Responsible for responding to severe weather conditions such as snow, flooding, or wind damage as needed and using appropriate snow removal equipment safely and effectively.
  • Effectively contributes information and supporting documents on budget related financial information as requested.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Familiarity with OSHA, PERRP, and SDS standards
  • Working knowledge of construction field, particularly building and maintenance of various trails, structures, and parking lots
  • Experience operating a variety of landscape equipment, trailers, and appropriate attachments safely and effectively
  • Working knowledge of carpentry, and sign installation
  • Ability to lead and appropriately motivate a team
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Basic Requirements: Must have high school diploma/GED preferred. Three (3) or more years of experience in landscaping and maintenance type work required. Two (2) or more years of supervisory/lead position experience preferred, although not required.

    Valid driver's license required. Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements required. Ohio Commercial Applicator license required

Due to the nature of this position the physical requirements include the ability use hands and fingers to handle/feel, frequently required to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb, stoop, kneel and crouch continuously throughout the work day. Ability to frequently lift/carry, push/pull up to 50 lbs. without assistance. Vision abilities include close, distance and peripheral vision. Frequently exposed to moderate to loud noise levels. Frequent exposure to airborne dusts, dirt, fumes, and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Hours: Must be able to work 7:00a to 3:00p, Monday through Friday with possibility of additional hours, including weekends at season peaks.

Pay: $17.75/ hour

Union Dues: $20.95 bi-weekly, after 90 days worked

Must be eligible for employment in the United States. Pre-employment background check and drug screening will be performed.
